Driver Admits Causing Pensioner’s Death

A driver has admitted causing the death of an 86-year-old woman on a pedestrian crossing.

Fredrick John Bowers, 70, of Station Road, Newnham, admitted causing the death of Kathleen Wood by careless or inconsiderate driving when he appeared before Stroud Magistrates’ Court today.

Prosecutor Theresa Perry said the crash happened on a new pedestrian crossing on Cheltenham Road East, Churchdown, on November 19 last year.
He failed to take proper account of the crossing and collided with a pedestrian, Mrs Wood, who was using the crossing to cross the road. She had almost completed the crossing and had right of way. She died in hospital of her injuries, said Miss Perry, who said Bowers stayed at the scene and was genuinely remorseful. He told police that he just did not see her.

He will be sentenced at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on April 15
